The UK is facing a sudden “Arctic plunge” as the Met Office issues a series of warnings for unseasonal snow and ice. Just as Brits were beginning to pack away their winter coats, a shift in wind direction has pulled freezing air down from the north, leaving several regions braced for a blanket of white and a sharp drop in temperatures.

Forecasters have confirmed that while we are deep into April 2026, a “polar maritime airmass” is set to sweep across the country, bringing the risk of snow showers and hazardous driving conditions to specific areas.
Target Areas: Where the Snow Will Fall
The Met Office has identified several key zones where the white stuff is most likely to settle. While much of the south will experience a “bitterly cold” rain, higher elevations and northern latitudes are at the center of the alerts.
1. Scotland and the Highlands
- Expectation: The heaviest accumulations are predicted here, with up to 10cm possible on higher ground.
- Alerts: Yellow warnings for snow and ice are in place for the Highlands, Aberdeenshire, and the Northern Isles.
2. Northern England and the Pennines
- Expectation: Slushy deposits are likely on the trans-Pennine routes (A66 and M62).
- Alerts: Areas including Cumbria, Northumberland, and the Peak District should prepare for “dustings” at lower levels and settling snow above 200 meters.
3. Northern Ireland and North Wales
- Expectation: Brief, heavy snow showers are expected overnight.
- Alerts: Higher peaks in Snowdonia and parts of County Antrim are on high alert for icy patches on untreated roads.
The “Sub-Zero” Timeline
Met Office Chief Meteorologist Frank Saunders noted that the mercury is expected to plummet well below average for this time of year.
- Overnight Lows: Rural areas in the north could see temperatures as low as -5°C, while urban centers like Manchester and Birmingham will hover around 0°C to 1°C.
- Wind Chill: Strong northerly winds will make it feel significantly colder, with the “real feel” temperature staying sub-zero throughout much of the weekend.
Travel Warnings: “Hazardous Conditions”
The National Highways and the AA have echoed the Met Office’s concerns, advising motorists in affected areas to check their vehicles before travel.
- Visibility: Heavy snow showers could lead to sudden drops in visibility.
- Icy Patches: As snow melts during the day and refreezes at night, “black ice” remains the primary danger for commuters.
- Public Transport: Rail networks in Scotland have warned of potential minor delays due to the freezing conditions affecting signals and tracks.
When Will the Warmth Return?
The good news for those craving spring is that this cold snap is expected to be relatively brief.
According to the latest long-range models, the Arctic air will likely be pushed out by a more temperate Atlantic system by Tuesday, April 21. This will bring a return to double-digit temperatures, though it will likely be accompanied by unsettled, rainy weather.
