Wellington Zoo is in mourning following the sudden and tragic loss of Bashii, a beloved 15-year-old Sumatran tiger. The zoo confirmed on Friday, April 17, 2026, that the majestic male tiger passed away while recovering from a veterinary procedure earlier in the week.
Bashii, known for his gentle nature and status as a vital ambassador for his critically endangered species, was a cornerstone of the zoo’s conservation efforts and a favorite among visitors for over a decade.
