Former Never Mind the Buzzcocks host Mark Lamarr has been handed a six-month driving disqualification after pleading guilty to a speeding offence. Despite a detailed emotional and physical appeal to the court, magistrates ruled that his circumstances did not meet the high legal threshold of “exceptional hardship.”

The 59-year-old comedian and presenter, best known for his sharp wit on 90s hits like The Big Breakfast and Shooting Stars, appeared at Willesden Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, March 24, 2026.

The Offence: Speeding in Twickenham

The court heard that Lamarr was caught driving a 2019 Volvo XC60 at 46mph in a 40mph zone in Twickenham, south-west London. The incident occurred at approximately 6:30 am in June of last year.

Lamarr admitted to the offence, telling the court:

“It was very early in the morning, there wasn’t anybody around. Sometimes when there’s no other traffic around at all, your mind isn’t quite as concentrated on the few miles an hour of the speed limit you are exceeding.”

The “Totting Up” Rule

While the offence itself was a minor breach, Lamarr already had nine penalty points on his licence from three previous speeding offences recorded between August 2023 and May 2025. Under the UK’s “totting up” system, reaching 12 points typically triggers an automatic six-month ban. To avoid this, Lamarr’s legal team argued that a ban would cause him “exceptional hardship.”

The Hardship Plea: Health and Family

Lamarr, who lives in Chiswick, presented several reasons why he desperately needed to keep his licence:

  • Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS): Lamarr explained that he suffers from severe CFS, which makes public transport a significant physical challenge. He told the court that on “bad days,” he is unable to walk for weeks and must remain bedridden for days at a time. He argued that walking to a train station or waiting at a bus stop was “out of the question” during these flare-ups.
  • Family Obligations: He stated that the car was essential for transporting his young daughter and for visiting his elderly mother, who suffers from arthritis.
  • Business Needs: Though “effectively retired” from television, Lamarr told the court he now earns a living as a record dealer and requires his vehicle to travel and find stock.

The Court’s Decision

Despite his testimony, the chairwoman of the magistrates’ bench, Margaret Mansi, remained unmoved. While acknowledging that a ban would cause “some hardship,” the court ruled it did not reach the legal definition of “exceptional.”

The Final Sentence:

  • Driving Ban: 6 months.
  • Penalty Points: 3 points (bringing his total to 12).
  • Fines & Costs: A £76 fine, a £30 victim surcharge, and £130 in prosecution costs (Total: £236).

Final Thoughts: The End of an Era for the “Buzzcocks” Star?

Mark Lamarr was a titan of British alternative comedy in the 1990s, defining the “scornful” and cynical tone of Never Mind the Buzzcocks from 1996 to 2005. His transition from the limelight to a quieter life as a record collector has been well-documented since his retirement.

However, this court case highlights the strict nature of UK driving laws—even for those with genuine health struggles. For Lamarr, the next six months will likely be a period of forced rest as he navigates life without the Volvo that served as his “lifeline” for his record-dealing business and family duties.
